## Direct definition

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the practice of improving how an app gets discovered and chosen inside app stores: ranking for the searches that matter (discovery) and converting the visitors who arrive (conversion). Its working surfaces are the listing itself — title, subtitle, keywords, descriptions, screenshots, ratings — plus the research and review process that decides what those surfaces say. ASO is often described as "SEO for apps," which is directionally useful and operationally misleading: stores rank on different inputs than web search, conversion assets carry far more weight, and the editable surface is a few hundred characters rather than a website.

## Why it matters

Store search is the largest organic acquisition channel for most apps, and the listing is the landing page every channel — ads, press, word of mouth — ultimately flows through. A weak listing quietly taxes every install source at once, which is why ASO returns compound: one conversion improvement applies to all traffic, forever.

## The two halves

| Half | Question | Main levers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Discovery | Do we appear for searches that matter? | Keyword research, title, subtitle, keyword field, indexed descriptions |
| Conversion | Do visitors who see us choose us? | Screenshots, first description lines, ratings, promotional text |

The halves fail independently: an app can rank everywhere and convert nowhere, or convert brilliantly on traffic it never receives. Diagnosis starts by deciding which half owns the problem.

## Signs ASO is actually being practiced

- Keyword choices trace to research, and every target keyword has an assigned field.
- Screenshots are treated as an ordered argument, not decorated UI captures.
- Changes ship one at a time with expectations, and results get read after rankings settle.
- Each locale gets native research rather than translated metadata.

## What usually goes wrong

### ASO is treated as a launch task

The listing ships once and fossilizes while rankings, competitors, and the product all move. ASO is an operating loop, not a launch checklist item.

### Discovery and conversion blur together

Teams respond to falling installs with keyword changes when the leak is a 3.9 rating, or redesign screenshots when impressions — not conversion — collapsed.

### Everything changes at once

Simultaneous edits make results unreadable, so nothing is ever learned and the next round of changes is guesswork again.

## Operating rule

ASO is being practiced when you can name which half — discovery or conversion — your current change targets, what it is expected to do, and when you will read the result. Anything less is listing decoration.
